Background of the study
Desertification, the degradation of land in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid regions, significantly disrupts agricultural productivity and rural livelihoods. In Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, extensive land degradation has been observed over recent years, adversely affecting farming communities (Adebayo, 2023). Contributing factors such as unsustainable farming practices, deforestation, and climate variability have accelerated the encroachment of desert-like conditions. This transformation not only reduces soil fertility and crop yields but also exacerbates socio-economic challenges by forcing migration and altering traditional land-use systems (Olusola, 2024). Recent studies underscore the importance of sustainable land management practices and community-based adaptation strategies to counter desertification trends (Fashola, 2023). By analyzing local climatic data, soil composition, and farming practices, the study aims to delineate the processes of desertification and their impacts on food security and economic stability in the region. In doing so, it contributes valuable insights for designing interventions that foster environmental resilience and sustainable rural development.
Statement of the problem
Farming communities in Iseyin face escalating challenges due to the advancing process of desertification. The deterioration of soil quality, declining agricultural productivity, and forced migration have intensified local economic hardships. Existing studies provide limited insight into the specific dynamics at play in this region. The lack of robust data on how desertification affects both environmental and socio-economic conditions impedes the development of effective mitigation strategies. Without targeted interventions, these communities risk further marginalization and food insecurity (Adebayo, 2023; Olusola, 2024).
Objectives of the study:
• To assess the extent of desertification in Iseyin Local Government Area.
• To evaluate its impact on soil fertility and agricultural productivity.
• To propose sustainable land management and adaptation strategies.
Research questions:
• What are the primary drivers of desertification in Iseyin?
• How does desertification affect soil quality and crop yields?
• What sustainable practices can mitigate the adverse effects of desertification?
Research Hypotheses:
• H1: Unsustainable farming practices significantly contribute to land degradation in Iseyin.
• H2: Desertification is directly correlated with declining agricultural productivity.
• H3: Community-based sustainable land management can reverse adverse desertification trends.
Significance of the study
This study offers critical insights into desertification’s effects on farming communities, guiding policy interventions for sustainable agriculture. Its findings will assist stakeholders in formulating effective land management strategies, ensuring food security and economic stability in Iseyin. The research is vital for environmental planners and rural development experts (Fashola, 2023).
Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining desertification effects on farming communities in Iseyin Local Government Area, Oyo State, without extending to other regions or climate change variables.
Definitions of terms:
• Desertification: The process of land degradation in dry areas leading to reduced productivity.
• Soil Fertility: The capacity of soil to support plant growth through the availability of essential nutrients.
• Sustainable Land Management: Practices aimed at maintaining or improving land productivity while minimizing environmental degradation.
